Please convey my thanks to Ryk, Miguel, Donovan & the rest of the crew for the excellent training program this past weekend at Phakisa with Motoschool. Since my first day on track in october last year I've attended motoschool regularly. I've been improving steadily(if slowly) & have found the atmosphere friendly & the instruction I've received a great help in rectifying some of my bad habits before they take a firm hold.
I ride a 600 in the intermediate group & have found the last couple of times I've been on track I've been getting held up quite a bit going into turns by bigger bikes, so my goal of the weekend past was to build up my confidence to overtake safely & smoothly.
The "no brakes" sessions on saturday were a real eye-opener to reinforce the importance of judging speed approaching the turn & i took to it like the proverbial "duck to water". Not only was i carrying greater speed into some of the turns, i was also able to overtake safely/regularly in the process without a single thought of braking. That, coupled with smooth roll-on of the throttle after turn in meant my lines were tighter thru apex to exit, the bike felt completely settled under me,my heart was where it's meant to be(rather than in my mouth) & my concentration was firmly fixed on the next approaching turn. The last session "putting it all into practice" (but with "single finger" braking allowed) saw my progress continue with smooth overtaking while consciously trying to keep my braking to a minimal.Donovan had mentioned that for some, the training would result in lap times going up & i think i may have fallen into that category, but as i ain't really fast enough(yet) to pay much attention to lap times, I'll settle for coming away from the day much smoother, with the bike much more settled beneath me & my confidence on the up & for everyone else there's the added bonus of one less brake grabbing holdup on track! Thanks again to all for making such an informative days training so enjoyable.
